This is not a fulfilling life...
Audio here.
Good morning and welcome to thought for the day. If you are into sport you will know the name of Scottie Scheffler. The American is the world’s current No1 golfer having won an Olympic gold, three majors, the US PGA championship and the British Open championship.
Well for a guy
who has been world number one for well over 100 weeks, and who has earned more
than £67M in prize money, you might be quite surprised to hear him say “This is
not a fulfilling life”.
What? Fame, fortune,
global success, and he says it’s not fulfilling? “It’s fulfilling from the
sense of accomplishment” the 29 year old says, “but it’s not fulfilling from a
sense of the deepest places of your heart”[1].
"There
are a lot of people that make it to what they thought was going to fulfil them
in life, and you get there, you get to number one in the world, and they're
like, 'what's the point? I really do believe that because, what is the
point? Why do I want to win this tournament so bad? That's something that I
wrestle with on a daily basis."
It's interesting isn’t it because here is a guy who has got everything he wants and yet it isn’t enough. I wonder what you are living for? The dream career, the model family, the next car, the latest gadgets or the perfect home? What if you get there and actually it isn’t all that it’s cracked up to be?
We were made
not for stuff, we were made for a relationship with the
God who loves us. Scottie Scheffler said
“"It feels like you work your whole life to celebrate winning a tournament
for like a few minutes. It only lasts a few minutes, that kind of euphoric
feeling."
Jesus Christ
on the other hand offered something more lasting when he said “Come to
me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my
yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and
you will find rest for your souls”[2].
Now that is
something fulfilling. Thanks for listening.
