Bad Guy

I wonder if any of you have got into acting before? I have, I used to do quite a bit of amateur theatre at school and university, but one part I never got to play was a good old fashioned villain. I’ve often thought it would be fun to just play a character of pure evil.

Well I read recently about one man who does just that! Kevin Lee – who actually grew up in Huntingdon – is one of the most famous British actors you’ve never heard of. Because he acts in Chinese films. His job is to play the white western bad guy in patriotic Chinese blockbusters, and he’s played characters ranging from an American colonel to a hitman to a blue monster with a face scar.

In an interview with the BBC he’s said “Foreigners don’t get the chance to play the main role/ If you look at Hollywood movies, how many Chinese or Asian actors do you see play the leading man?”

All that being said, Lee in that same interview suggests that he might like to play a slightly different role, maybe play one of the good guys.

As much as I’ve said it might have been nice to play a villain when I did some acting, I can imagine it gets a bit tiring after a while. I wonder where you’d put yourself, or humans in general on the scale of heroes to villains? Are we in general good guys, or bad guys? Well the Bible tells us that in the story of history, we’re the bad guys! We’ve rebelled against God despite all his kindnesses to us, giving us life, creation and everything. We’re now living as the bad guys in the story, rebelling against God and his good rule, we’ve made ourselves his enemies.

But the gospel is good news for bad guys – Romans chapter 5 says “We were God’s enemies, but he made us his friends through the death of his Son.”

Are you tired of being God’s enemy? Are you, like Kevin Lee, tired of being the bad guy? Well pray that God will make this true for you. Come to Jesus, let God make you his friend. Stop being his enemies, stop being the bad guy, and accept his offer of friendship.

Have a great day.
