There's a Lady who's sure
Sometimes when people find out that
I’m a Christian, they say, “I wish I had your faith”. I think they would quite
like to be able to be certain about God and what he’s like, but they just don’t
think you can ever be sure.
And I get that. There are so many
different ideas of God in the world, who’s to say that my opinion is better
than anyone else’s? But nevertheless, wouldn’t it be nice to be able to be
certain? Take Christianity for example. Imagine if you could go back in time
and revisit all the things that Jesus did. Then we could make up our own minds
as to whether it’s really true or not. We could be sure.
Well until someone builds a time
machine, that’s not possible. But we are able to do something that is nearly as
good.
Right back in the earliest days of
Christianity there was a doctor called Luke. He lived in the Roman empire at
the very time that Christianity was spreading, just a few years after Jesus’
death. He acted like a reporter after the events, going back to the original
people who saw Jesus and finding out from them exactly what they had seen. He
said he “carefully investigated everything from the beginning and decided to
write an orderly account” (Luke 1:3).
His account is what we now call Luke’s Gospel and you can listen to it as a
free audiobook or read it on your phone. If you’ve got an old bible on a shelf,
dust it down you could probably read Luke’s short book in an evening. In fact,
if you would like a free copy of Luke’s book, contact me via the Christ Church
Huntingdon website and I’d be happy to get you a free copy.
We can’t build a time machine, but
we can listen to what Luke the expert historian journalist reports about the
events surrounding Jesus’ life as seen by the eyewitnesses. His amazing
teaching, the miracles that he did, his death, and his rising from death. Even
if you are sceptical, it’s all written down for you to read.
Don’t take my word for it, why not
read it for yourself and make your own mind up, and then like the lady in the
next song, you can be sure.
Thanks so much for listening and
have a good day.
