I just called to say I love you/ Somebody to love you/ When a man loves a woman/ Can’t buy me love/ Love Shack/ Love in an elevator/ Can’t help falling in love/ Got a whole lotta love/ Sunshine of your love/ All you need is love/

It’s the theme of a thousand songs, it’s the name of 29 albums, it’s the title of 20 films, it’s the name of 12 places in the US (according to Wikipedia), it will be the subject of a thousand conversations today, there’s even a crater on the moon named after it. I’m talking about love.

We talk about falling in love, staying in love, being in love, falling out of love. We love to love and long to be loved. But what is love? Do we actually know what it is?

For some Love is spelled L U S T. LUST. As one song puts it “let’s do it like they do on the Discovery Channel”. Well we won’t go into details there as this is a family show, but surely there’s more to love than lust. How many people have thought they found love, when actually they were just being used.

For others love is spelled  F E E L. FEEL. It’s about feelings. “I feel it in my fingers, I feel it in my toes, love is all around me, and so the feeling grows”. But what about when the feelings go, and he or she no longer makes me feel so special? Should we leave him or her because we no longer feel in love. If love is feelings that’s what many would suggest.

Real love is spelled G I V E. It’s love that keeps on loving even when the other person isn’t always that lovable or easy to love (and which of us are)? Real love gives and gives and gives and forgives. It’s not willing to be trampled on, but it is willing to make sacrifices for the other and keep going even when things are tough.

Once a young girl saw a weathervane with the words GOD IS LOVE on it. You know one of those things at the top of an old house that swings around in the wind. The girl asked her dad. Does God’s love come and go like the weather? The dad replied, no. Whatever the weather, God’s love is always there for us”. That’s the message of the Bible. “This is love not that we loved God but that he loved us, and sent his son as a sacrifice for our sins”.  God’s love keeps going.

Thanks for listening. Have a great day.
